A Risky Occupation
At the same time that Nadya graduated from Mt. San Antonio College in 1996, she married Marcos Gutierrez. Additionally, she began working at the Norwalk, California-based Metropolitan State Hospital for the Mentally Insane. Working was rewarding, but it was also risky and difficult. Having children was obviously important to Nadya, but she also wanted a fulfilling career. Her life, however, took a turn for the worse after an unfortunate incident occurred at work.
Tragedy Strikes
On September 18, 1999, Nadya Suleman was working in a psychiatric facility when she was caught up in a tragic accident. Nadya tried to intervene immediately after a fight broke out at the facility because of the presence of twenty patients. Nadya suffered a ruptured disc after one of the female patients flung a wooden desk into the air, striking her back. Nadya received $170,000 in workers’ compensation, but the money was only enough to get her by for a short period of time and was the least of her problems.
